8th/7th grade micrography portraits

7th and 8th grade girls learned about micrography, images made from text. Students learned about value (the lightness and darkness of an image) and learned to create value with text, either by adding variation of size, distance and font of text.  They also used decorative text in the background to describe themselves. Some of their descriptions are easy to read and some students made their words into a pattern-- see if you can read them all!

I am so impressed with these portraits, and I think you will be as well!

5th grade observation drawings

Halloween was over and 5th graders and I still needed our sugar fix. Their job was to draw their candy zoomed in (larger than life) and with much detail. It was great to see students looking so closely at their candy and not eating it! The results are sweet and delicious!

Joan Miro Parties

2nd graders looked at the artwork of abstract artist, Joan Miro His art looks like this:

We identified that he uses geometric shapes (shapes with names) as well as organic shapes ( shapes without names). Students then played a game where they rolled dice to decide on the shape of body, head, eyes, etc. They also needed to make a boarder of geometric shapes. These characters look like they are ready to party!

Radial Symmetry by 3rd Grade

3rd graders learned about Radial Symmetry-- when parts of a circle are exactly the same. We looked at designs in nature and man-made designs. We also designed a strategic way to ensure our designs had radial symmetry-- meaning they can have many lines of symmetry. This is one of my favorite projects of the year because the results are so stunning!
