8th/7th grade micrography portraits

7th and 8th grade girls learned about micrography, images made from text. Students learned about value (the lightness and darkness of an image) and learned to create value with text, either by adding variation of size, distance and font of text.  They also used decorative text in the background to describe themselves. Some of their descriptions are easy to read and some students made their words into a pattern-- see if you can read them all!
I am so impressed with these portraits, and I think you will be as well!

Foreshortening Portraits

7th graders created self portraits---some unordinary self portraits. They used a skill called foreshortening-- the idea that somethings looks different based on the angle viewed. These portraits give the appearance of arms and legs out in front of students--like falling. Students liked the look of this new skill.

Perspective Cities

6th and 7th graders of the Wisconsin Badger enrichment group created their own cities using the perspective drawing method. Perspective is the idea that things get smaller as they are further from us and that things appear 3-d. This is not any easy way of drawing and students practiced and practiced to get it right. Below you will see cities from a traditional perspective, bird's eye perspective or 2-point perspective.

7th grade paper relief sculpture

Mr. Cupp's 7th grade class worked on a paper relief sculpture. The learned about repetition and creating balance within an image. Their challenge was to make 50 of the same form (with variations in size) and arrange them on a paper to create visual balance. Balance is a component of successful art.  The only supplies students used were paper and glue. The results are stunning and students continue to get compliments on their sculptures.
