Color Mixing experiment

4th graders are learning about color mixing. They learned about the 3 primary colors, red, yellow, blue, and they knew that when mixed together, they made different colors. They began the experiment by making several hypotheses of what would happen when you mixed certain colors, red and blue for example. Then students worked together as tables to see what actually happens. They received kits with food coloring and water and cups, and it was their job to mix the primary colors and write the results. They had a blast and took control over their own learning to determine the secondary colors!

When students were done creating secondary colors, they got to experiment with the colors in any  way they pleased, often mixing ALL colors together!

September in the Art Room

Students are starting to get into the nitty gritty of their projects. Kindergarten and 1st grade are learning about different supplies and how to use them. We are using the words material to refer to supplies and method to refer HOW to use supplies. They are also comparing and contrasting different materials. So far we know about crayons, markers and colored pencils. On to pastels and paint in the weeks to come!

Students observe me demonstrate materials and methods

Then students set out to explore methods and materials on their own!
