Second Graders Miss Summer!

In second grade we learned about the term self-portrait. After talking about facial and body proportions (pretty advanced stuff for 2nd graders) we gave the project a twist by making them underwater portraits. We looked at the photography of Sarah Lee to make some predictions on how we might look different underwater.

Welcome Back to the new 2013-2014 school year! I had a very relaxing summer that involved the usual bike-riding, gardening and art making with a few fun adventures thrown in.

While summer was great, I am very excited to begin this new school year! I have a feeling it's going to be Bucktown's most successful year yet.

Claymation Animation Creation

WOW are the words I have to explain the results and process of this project. Mr. Kuebler's 6th grade class had the task of creating a claymation animation. Students needed to create characters out of clay and a set out of paper and anything they kind find in the art room. They then used an ipad to take animate a story. By moving the characters ever so slightly and taking a picture every time, it gives the appearance of movement.

The students did a phenomenal job working together, delegating tasks and compromising. Below are photos of students working. You can follow the link to watch their animations.

6th grade Claymation Animations <---This is the link!

Everyday there was a lot of set up and tear down before filming could even begin.

Here are students looking at the photos they take and the video clips they already have. They also had to make sure the ipad (camera) was in the same spot everyday for smooth filming.

Color Schemes

4th grade learned about color schemes in their latest project. A color scheme is a group of colors used  on purpose to create an effect. We discussed why artists might use certain colors and how different colors cause us to respond differently. Students learned about 6 color schemes total and are now using them in future projects.

Here students colored the same image in different color schemes to notice how it effected to mood of the image.

7th grade paper relief sculpture

Mr. Cupp's 7th grade class worked on a paper relief sculpture. The learned about repetition and creating balance within an image. Their challenge was to make 50 of the same form (with variations in size) and arrange them on a paper to create visual balance. Balance is a component of successful art.  The only supplies students used were paper and glue. The results are stunning and students continue to get compliments on their sculptures.

Cows and Basic shapes

Bucktown's 1st graders learned how to combine basic shapes to create full images. Students learned that ALL objects can be broken down into basic shapes to make it easier to draw.
